Lo Siento Muy Mucho

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. I've been all kinds of busy lately trying to get everything in order in preparation for the next few months. I'm really going to do my best to resume regular updates tomorrow. Until then, please stop emailing me asking if everything's fine. If you don't hear from me by, say, Friday, assume I've been kidnapped by Scarlott Johansson and I've been forced into white slavery. Please, do not rescue me no matter what you hear.

Sofware for OS X - Recommendations?

For the past however many years I've been using web interfaces for blogging. I was on blogger back before they were bought by google, and then I made the switch to Typepad. However, I'd like to be able to continue posting while we're in Africa, and I won't be able to do that if I'm dependent on a web connection every time I want to write an update. I guess what I'm looking for is something like Outlook or Thunderbird, but for blogging instead of email.

I've been looking at various blog editors, and right now I've narrowed it down to Ecto and MarsEdit. It's a difficult decision because they both suck in unique ways. Neither app behaves the way it ought to, and they've each got different annoying quirks. Anyway, if anyone out there has any recommendations on a decent Typepad-compatible editor for Mac OS X, I'm all ears.

Also, I need a quick and easy way to take images from my monstrosity of a digital camera (6 MP) and easily convert them to web-friendly size. Ideally I'd like to find a macro where I could just right click on the file in Finder and select "Format for Web" or whatever and have my photo automagically resized to 450px by 300px at a resolution of around 72.

While I'm at it, if there's any other Mac software you can't live without please let me know what it is. I might not be able to live without it either, in which case my life may very well be in your hands. Don't let me down.

Back to Life

After a long hiatus, I'm trying to get this site back together again. I did some work today on the user interface, but I'm pretty frustrated by Microsoft's continuing refusal to support W3C standards on CSS (and HTML and Javascript...). If you're reading this in Internet Explorer you've probably noticed by now that this page looks like shit. Sorry, but I just don't have the time right now to implement a separate version for IE users.

Besides, isn't it time for you to switch to a grown-up's web browser?

Desperation

If you want to see the effect that Google's Gmail service has had on people around the world, check out the comments on this post. I'm going to be deleting them in a few days, but it's worth a look just to see how desperate people are for these addresses.

Notice the number of times I posted comments *myself* to the effect of "HEY - QUIT BUGGING ME". But it was like fighting a forest fire with a water pistol. These are obviously some very determined web-surfers.

I've Got A Fever, And The Only Cure Is MORE POLLS

With all the breathless "reporting" going on all over the mainstream media, it's hard not to get caught up in all the poll numbers. Bush is ahead by one!! Kerry's up by two!! Eight percent of Nader supporters are voting Nader!! Oh how the media whores love a good, tight race.

The only problem is that the pollsters don't know shit. Remember this?

Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean has pulled away from the field in the Democratic Presidential nomination race: his support among Democratic primary voters nationwide has risen in the past month, and held steady after the news of Saddam Hussein's capture.

[...]

Dean has the backing of 23 percent of likely primary voters, the same as he did in the days just prior to Saddam's capture, and up from 14 percent in November. His nearest rivals today are Wesley Clark and Joe Lieberman, both at 10 percent.

Way to go, guys. Why did we even bother having primaries?

And here's another blast from the past. On October 26, 2000, Gallup reported that Bush was ahead of Gore by 13 percent among likely voters. We all know how that one turned out. Great job, media whores! A bright, shiny gold medal for the Americans in the Media Special Olympics.

My point, of course, is that these assholes don't know shit. They never have, and they never will. The only poll that matters is the one they're going to take on November 2nd, so until then all you media whores can go get fucked.

In honor of said assholes, I hereby announce SmooveJ's Official Daily Poll. Wolf Blitzer, eat your heart out.

P.S. - Let me know if you have any problems with pop-ups or anything. If this poll nonsense is too annoying I'll pull it down with a right quickness.

Been pretty sick lately. Hopefully I'll be back to full strength tomorrow, but no promises.

Ugh.

People Are Strange

I was just perusing my website referral logs, and I noticed that someone came to TTSU via a Google search for information on "how to shit on cats".

This site was number 3 out of 301,000.

I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Woohoo!!

The email subscription thingie over on the right finally works properly!! I've been messing with it for over a week, and it's been messing with me right back. It's supposed to send out an email every night with all the posts that have published over the course of the day, but it's not as simple as it sounds. It never is, is it?

Sometimes it would send out just the last post. Other times it would send out all the posts, but only the first 30 words in each one. A few days ago it sent out an email with all the posts. ALL the posts. Like, over 500 of them.

After a lot of monkeying with the RSS template, I finally realized that it had to do with the format of the date string. So I fixed it up and it's been nothing but peaches and butterscotch ever since.

Enjoy.

More Mindblowing Site Updates

I've added a couple of nifty features to the site. Over on the right I've got it set up so that you can subscribe to TTSU. If you enter your email address you'll receive one email at the end of the day with all of that day's postings. I swear on my sister's life the email addresses will only be used for the powers of good. If I get any reports of people being spammed or anything I'll cancel the service with a quickness.

I've also implemented some live news feeds on the left and the right sidebars. On the left you'll find headlines from Yahoo's Oddly Enough as well as the latest updates to Metafilter. If you're not familiar with Metafilter, just check out the feed. There's really no point in even trying to describe it. Even the term "Pork Chocolate Bar" does not suffice (link via Metafilter, obviously).

On the right sibebar are news feeds from the BBC, headlines from the NYT, and the most recent stories over at Salon.com. For the hardcore news junkies/people bored at work, these are updated several times per day so hitting refresh on your browser will likely get you some fresh dirt.

For those who don't know, Salon is a paysite that will give you a free day pass if you click through a short advertisement. Subscriptions are cheap though and Salon does great work, so if you've got an extra 15 bucks sitting around it would be money well spent.

This is actually starting to look like a real website. My computer science professors would be so proud (here's a little GoogleLove to Dr. Valerie Barr).

The New Pad

Quite a few changes around Turn That Shit UP. I've been working on this new version off and on for the past few months, and I've got to admit, I'm pretty pleased with myself.

The old site was powered by Blogger, which was a great service (not to mention free), but I'd pretty much taken it as far as it could go. I really wanted to have more control over stuff like archiving and CSS functionality and whatnot, and Blogger just wasn't up to task. This new version is powered by Typepad, and it's quite a bit more powerful.

Lots of cool features around - check out the photo albums on the right for starters. The interface and the archiving are much better, and I've rigged up a couple of other nifty tricks as well. My fellow nerds will appreciate the full RSS functionality and the trackback capabilities. Yeah, I know, not that big a deal, but it's the little things, right?

Sadly, I couldn't move all the comments over from the old site, and it seems as though most of the links to images were screwed up somewhere along the way. I've gone through and fixed the recent ones, but most of them are just going to be chalked up as a loss.

Finally, as most of you know this site is mainly political in nature, but that will soon be changing as well (70 days and counting...). If everything goes according to plan my wife Fiona and I will be selling most of our crap and going on a big huge adventure, and this site will follow us along.

Please let me know if anything is broken or if you have any ideas on how something could be improved. And most importantly, thanks for reading. I hope you enjoy the new site.
