Mr. Somnuk

Mr. Somnuk

Here is Mr. Yabeh's son, Somnuk. He's a 32 year old father of two who lost his boat and his house in the tsunami. Between him and his father, we gave a total of 51,000 baht ($1300US).

Somnuk is holding his governmental compensation forms, but the reason I love this picture is because of the expression on Mr. Yabeh's face in the background. Thai people are among the happiest on earth, but as soon as you point a camera at them they turn into stoic warriors. Only candid shots like these can begin to convey their true nature and the joy that everybody was feeling on this day.
