Kava

Kava

A big part of Fijian culture revolves around Kava. It's a drink made from the ground root of the Kava plant, and it tastes like a big bowl of muddy water.

The first time you drink it your tongue and lips go numb and the urge to purge is almost too much. Fiona literally ran to the bathroom on her first night.

However, no one drinks it for the taste. There's a whole social atmosphere that revolves around kava, and that's why people drink it. Every night I would join them and sit around talking for hours.

After a few nights, we'd finally gotten to know each other and that's when I really started learning about Fijian culture and vice versa. We asked each other all kinds of questions - they wanted to know about George Bush and American girls and I wanted to know about pretty much anything they were willing to tell me.
